Islamabad, Pakistan November 19: Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan visited M-5 Motorway near Jalalpur Pirwala on Tuesday to review the repair and further restoration work being done on motorway after flooding.
The minister during his visit directed the NHA to ensure keeping one-way traffic on motorway open, by November 30 and advised to expedite work so that people should not face any hindrance in travelling. He examined closely the quality of the rehabilitation and directed NHA engineers to maintain high standards of work during repair.
“We will not allow substandard work at any stage,” he added in his comments, stressing repairs be carried out promptly and to high quality. The officials have also been asked to furnish a report in detail about the progress within a week and the minister would carry out another inspection later on completion.
Rest Stops and the Amenities They Offer Are Under Pressure
The minister also visited rest houses and roadside facilities on M-5. In comments reflecting his discontent with their plight, he also slammed the officials concerned urging them to act now. [Pull Quote:] “It’s unacceptable for any traveller to arrive at disgusting restrooms, foodless tuck shops and unkempt facilities,” he said.
Khan said Ministry of Communications is working to ensure complete restoration of M-5 Motorway at the earliest. NHA authorities apprised him about the ongoing rehabilitation work and difficulties in flood-hit areas.
Impact on Commuters
The M5 Motorway’s main use is by commuters and freight traffic travelling between the major cities of Pakistan. The rehabilitation of traffic and facilities along this beeline route will be a critical element of both local and intercity transportation. With the stringent vigil by government, commuters can hope for better safety measures, improved travelling experience and hygienic roadside facilities in times to come.
