Govt Confirms Solar Net-Metering Is NOT Hurting the National Grid

The Government response also confirmed that the surge in solar net-metering is not hurting Pakistan’s National Grid despite grumblings by some who complain that rooftop solar users are causing the grid to falter or lower its demand.

In a hearing held by Nepra on the 2026 power purchase price rebasing, it was clarified by CEO CPPA Rehan Akhtar that solar has been added in great numbers and there is no adverse impact on the grid.

The Government response also confirmed that the Solar Net-Metering sensation is not having a negative impact of Pakistan National Grid despite murmuring by few voices who allegedly spread false propaganda that solar users are collapsing the grid or reducing demand.

Nepra held a hearing on 2026 power purchase price rebasing in which CEO CPPA Rehan Akhtar made it clear that Solar has been hooked up in abundance and there is no negative effect on the grid.

Households and businesses that have installed net-metering systems still rely on about the same volume of power from the grid, according to Akhtar. “Their grid pulls are consistent,” he said, but that dynamic could change as solar adoption increases.

Official data presented in the hearing revealed that banked net-metering electricity injected into the grid had skyrocketed by 173%, from 266 million units in 2023 to 726 million units a year later. Demand growth of only 1% by state-run distribution companies couldn’t prevent this surge.

And K-Electric, the private utility in Karachi, saw its grid consumption jump 9.4% after fully reinstating its full 2,050 MW draw.

The comments came as Nepra examined CPPA’s petition to rebase the national power purchase price under the Jan 2026 government policy directive.
